MOSAIC LABORATORY – DIRECTOR DAFNI ANGELIDOU
MOSAIC COURSE OUTLIN
COURSE OUTLINE
Attending the course in the mosaic workshop is structured in three annual study cycles (six semesters). It is possible for students to choose it from the second to the fourth year of their studies. During all three cycles, the teaching material focuses mainly on visual issues and aesthetic-technical information regarding the construction of mosaics. Students learn all the basic techniques of making mosaics, so that they are able to make mosaics with the technique of indirect and direct voting and the use of different mortars as well as large-scale mosaics in metal and wooden crates, mosaics in epoxy resins, wax , special constructions or in the third dimension The theoretical issues are the students’ introduction to the essential concepts of mosaic as it has existed throughout the ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine tradition. However, the course focuses on the study of plastic solutions that are also applied to modern mosaics. The different ways of voting, the different design styles and the different perception of space are examined, as it is shaped according to the eras in the history of art and in the personal creations of contemporary artists.
The aim of the course is to consolidate and explore the possibilities of the medium of mosaic.
As a material, the mosaic can express all kinds of visual searches. The students choose to negotiate visual issues that concern them, and understand the overall picture of the possibilities of the medium, through the process of creating their own designs – mosaic works. The mosaic workshop is inextricably linked to the core workshop that the students attend. the possibility of preparing a diploma thesis in the medium of Mosaic or to integrate the medium into other subjects, if the students so wish.
There are projections of images from ancient, Byzantine and modern mosaic works. There are also screenings of students’ works from previous years (from the archive of the workshop which includes all the mosaics made in the mosaic workshop from 1987 to the present day).
